Bruce Pritchard is a soccer (football) player and aspiring writer. Initially carefree, Bruce's zest for life is challenged when shortly after his brother's wedding, he succumbs to a mysterious degenerative disease which leaves him a paraplegic (a.k.a. paralyzed from the waist down). Considering his family to be overburdened, he instead opts to place himself into a church-run home for the disabled. However, he is initially combative in regards to the regulations and standoffish to fellow patients. Things change when he meets Jill Matthews, a patient with polio engaged to another man. After she realizes that living with family does not suit her either, she returns to the home. With the help of kindly married staff techs Sarah and Bill Charles, romance begins to blossom between Jill and Bruce as she helps draw him out of his shell.
