When some orphans are sent by a missionary on a train from New York to an orphanage in the West. ten-year-old Olaf Tryggvesson manages to escape when the train stops at a station. Soon he befriends an Indian, who takes him to his camp. However, the Indian is killed during a game of chance by Dead Shot Jackson, who also shoots his wife. During the ensuing brawl, Jackson's partner is also killed, while Blue Wing, an Indian boy, is knocked unconscious. Not knowing Olaf is a witness, Jackson accuses Blue Wing of the murder, but Olaf exonerates the boy, thus Jackson is forced to flee for his life. Olaf becomes friends with Pastor Bill and the Morrison family, founders of Canyon Creek Sunday School. One Sunday, during service, Dead Shot Jackson shoots the pastor, but Olaf shields him taking the bullets for him. The boy survives, but is wounded. And, when Jackson, who has been arrested, is sentenced to hang, Olaf convinces the townspeople to spare the outlaw's life. Pastor Bill and Mary Morrison marry, and Olaf becomes a beloved member of their growing family.
