Shehata Afandi, a humble clerk who unexpectedly inherits a large fortune when a wealthy woman dies while under his responsibility. With his sudden wealth, he begins living a life of luxury and considers marrying his former neighbor Asrar - though she loves another man, Saïd. As Shehata prepares for his new life, he receives devastating news: he has an incurable illness and only a short time to live. Faced with his mortality, he seeks to do good with his wealth and initially turns his palace into a charity.
