Two young Americans, both psychologically damaged, meet in Rio de Janeiro. Judy Reynolds, from a wealthy New York City family, has just arrived in the city in wanting to escape the control of her life wielded by her parents. That control, including having just come out of a recently annulled marriage, has led to her frigidity. Bill Patterson once worked as an architect, but is in Rio working as a draftsman for US Steel. It isn't until after their initial encounter that Judy learns that his silence, what she mistook for standoffishness, was really because he is mute. Mutual acquaintances don't know why he is so, but if they discover the truth, they will learn that it is psychosomatic due to an event three years ago for which he blamed himself in its outcome, it which also led to his professional decline. Getting over their initial meeting, Judy and Bill start to spend more time together and eventually fall in love. The question becomes whether they can get over their individual issues which may be an obstacle to a future together.
