One-third of American teenagers will end up dropping out of school. Joe Conklin is one such drop out, his situation which is examined in he not having either the necessary supports at home or at school to provide the guidance to spur him to that academic learning. While the remainder of his life is not predetermined, he looks to have a difficult life in already having lost a few jobs and having to fight for other low paying jobs with a swath of others like him who are unskilled. While he had no part of why his unsupportive home life was the way it was, he could have benefited from programs at school that may have encouraged that academic learning, programs such as technical courses and work experience, extracurricular activities, and guidance counseling.
