Peter Pep is the son of Pierre Pep, the proprietor of a hairdressing and beauty emporium. Next door is the delicatessen Store of Fuller Hulkinbulk. Amid the dill pickles and pickled herring lives Dorothy, darling daughter of Fuller. The delicatessen king and the hairdressing Frenchmen are not exactly friendly enemies. There is nothing friendly about them. The fact that Peter and Dorothy are lovers does not make them feel any more kindly toward each other. In fact, Fuller threatens to knock Pierre for a row of tinned tripe while fiery Pierre retaliates with a promise to put a permanent wave in the bulky Fuller-each threatens dire things if the other does not keep his offspring away from his child. But when one path is closed, love will find another. A speaking tube into which each whispers sweet nothings is pressed into service. Then a secret trap-door does its share in the clandestine love-making until that, too, is discovered. The path of love is getting bumpy for the young pair, when Fuller Hulkinbulk is enticed into the beauty parlor on a guarantee that a new machine they have acquired will positively grow hair. As he's as bald as an egg, that's quite an inducement. It begins to look like the way of the young lovers is getting smoother for Fuller wants hair and Pierre seems to have the means to get it for him but Peter spills the hair-tonic all over Fuller and a monkey turns ten thousand volts into the machine-and Fuller comes out looking like a cross between the bearded lady and the wild man from Borneo. He wrecks the machine and a festive and playful bolt of high tension lightning chases Peter into a powder house where the dynamite does its well known stuff.
