Tarascon on the Rhone

We are first shown the bridge spanning the Rhone between the cities of Tarascon and Beaucaire (France), after which we are taken on a short trip up the river to the old castle which was begun by Count Louis the Second in the fourteenth century and finished by King Rene of Anjou in the fifteenth century. The old turret stair and chapel entrance are charming examples of fifteenth century architecture. The castle is now used as a prison, and it is but a few moments' walk from this famous old building to the quaint market and town hall which we next visit. After enjoying the various activities of the natives at this place of barter we are next shown the statue in memory of the town's deliverance from a dragon. La Tarasque, a legendary monster which threatened the town in the early part of the fourteenth century. Our little journey is shortly brought to a close by a little tour to the Villa Tartarn and the castle of Beaucaire, which we view by the rays of the setting sun.
