A beautiful young Princess is so rich that there is practically nothing left for her to desire. She is so satiated with good things that she does not know what to do to enjoy herself. Several handsome young Princes seek her hand in marriage, but she refuses them all as she does not love anyone. One day, in a moment of waywardness, she throws a goblet into the sea with the remark that she will share her throne with the man who succeeds in bringing it back to her. No one among her admirers has the courage to plunge into the sea in order to recover the cup. A young sailor who has admired the Princess since the day he first saw her, makes up his mind that he will get the goblet at all costs. Accordingly, he invokes the aid of the Fairies of the Sea. One of them, disguised as an old woman, appears and undertakes to conduct him to the spot where the cup lies. He recovers it, but has to promise to return to the Mermaid Queen whenever he hears the sound of her conch-shell horn. Then he presents himself at the palace of the Princess and presents the goblet to her. She fulfills her promise and rewards him with her hand and half of her kingdom. The Mermaid, still disguised as an old woman, comes to the wadding. She is turned away by the courtiers. In revenge, she waits until the bridal pair are alone and about to retire for the night. Then the Mermaid's horn sounds a loud blast! The bridegroom starts for he recalls his rash promise to return to the Mermaid Queen at the call of the horn. He hesitates and lingers with his bride.
