Suzume Reviews

Reviewed By: Rovi

Suzume is the thirteenth feature film written and directed by Shinkai Makoto. The Japanese cast includes Hara Nanoka, Matsumura Hokuto, Fukatsu Eri, Sometani Shota, Hanase Kotone, Hanazawa Kana, and Matsumoto Hakuou II. Teenager Iwato Suzume lives a happy but unfulfilled life in Japan. She lives with her aunt and has plenty of friends at school, but behind that well-adjusted façade, her mind has blocked away a tragic and traumatizing event. An event which she reexperiences in pieces in her dreams. This incident from her childhood has opened a door for her however, as she is able to see supernatural forces that regular people can't. After a run-in with a mysterious and handsome stranger, Munakata Sota, she is pulled into his incredible adventure to help save the country she loves so much. The writing is remarkable. The romance aspect of the movie is subtle at first, taking a backseat to the action-adventure plot of saving Japan from a supernatural entity which is determined to destroy the country. In addition, the story seamlessly brings together classic Japanese folklore with a modern setting. Multiple themes are explored through Suzume's interactions and journey to self-discovery. By the end, all of the characters are put to the test as both of these plotlines come crashing together. Each of the supporting characters play an important role in the movie and in Suzume's journey. The characters are multi-dimensional, and it is obvious that each is also following their own journey. Not only do they help Suzume on her mission, they are also impacted by her kindness and curiosity. The music for Suzume was composed and performed by RADWIMPS, a Japanese rock band. With the title song (found in the trailer) featuring singer Toaka. The title song is haunting, delicate, and powerful at the same time, which matches the mood and animation of the movie. RADWIMPS also collaborated with director Shinkai Makoto three previous times, including his breakout movie Your Name, which is the third highest grossing anime movie of all time. By opening weekend, Suzume already reached the fourth spot on that list. For those who follow Shinkai Makoto, they may find that the storyline feels similar to some of his previous work. If viewers are expecting something that will push the boundaries past what he has already achieved with his biggest movies (Your Name, 5 Centimeters per Second, and Weathering With You), they may be slightly disappointed. However, those unfamiliar with his previous movies, may find themselves overwhelmed with the likeable characters, the beautiful animation, the touching story, and the powerful messages.Suzume is a story about love, loss, and what tragedy can do to a country and its people. It is a heartbreaking tale of a teenager spreading her wings as she learns about herself and her past. A must-see for anime fans and those interested in the medium.
