Eric Sange, a bestselling author, decides to invest his earnings in the purchase of a French country house where he can withdraw from the world and write the novel his publisher is expecting. He discovers an old estate which, though far too large and dilapidated, holds him fast. More than the house itself, it is the strangeness and provocative attitude of the young blonde who opens the door to him that attract him. Already he is thinking of his novel, and the dark rooms haunted by Ariane feed his imagination. The next day, when he returns, he finds a different pretty woman: attended by Céleste, the dark-haired Agathe apparently knows nothing of the ghostly owner. Without fully understanding it, Eric Sange gradually uncovers the mystification during successive visits and, driven by curiosity, settles in to work at the very heart of the mystery that fuels his inspiration.
