In the Transvaal in 1901, the British army condemns to death American mining engineer Grant Merrick for aiding and abetting the Boer enemy. He escapes from custody and takes refuge at an isolated Boer farm, Sunrise. After three deserters from the British army arrive on the scene, Merrick takes steps to protect himself and the family.
