Gheorghe, who emigrated to London to study, returns to his native small island in the Greek Sea after his father's death, to take possession of his inheritance, which is reduced to an old house and a barren field. Soon after, he falls in love with Elena, his friend David's wife. The two lovers let David drown in the sea during a boat trip and are able to indulge in their love, hated by the entire village. Meanwhile, David's mother, having discovered her daughter-in-law's affair, is left paralyzed by a stroke, while Gheorghe and Elena experience disagreements, misunderstandings, and arguments, until they hate each other and commit suicide.
