The DLO team is dealing with the most difficult of dead letters, those burned almost beyond being salvageable. One they try to salvage ends up being written to Phoebe telling of her mother. What they will also discover is that the grains of sand enclosed in the envelope are an important component. Their task at delivering the only part decipherable of the letter to Phoebe takes on greater meaning when Phoebe, who they locate, asks the team for a favor. Meanwhile, it's Shane's birthday. Beyond the gift from Oliver, she doesn't want anyone, especially Oliver, to know that she received a card from Scott. And Joe O'Toole is in town wanting to speak to his son Oliver, who in return has no intention of hearing anything his father has to say in never having forgiven him for shutting Oliver's mother out of their lives following the divorce. If Oliver does decide to hear what Joe has to say, he will learn of a complex family history that could change Oliver's life.
