Raphaël, a rustic carpenter from Normandy, returns to his home village at the end of World War I and learns that his wife died shortly after giving birth to their daughter. Madame Adeline takes care of little Juliette and also takes the father in at her farm. Here they live together with other outsiders. When Raphaël hears that the village innkeeper, who is popular with everyone, is said to have raped his wife, he confronts him. Shortly afterwards, the innkeeper dies, and his family blames Raphaël for his death. He loses his job and has to support himself and his daughter by carving wooden toys. Juliette grows up without friends, but is always lovingly cared for by her father. One day, she meets a witch in the forest who prophesies that a purple sail will appear in the sky and carry her out into the world. Juliette, now a young woman, discovers her talent for music. Her songs repeatedly revolve around the prophecy, until one day the pilot Jean has to make an emergency landing with his plane near the farm. Are the wings of his biplane the purple sails that will carry Juliette out into the world?
