Recollections of the Yellow House follows João de Deus, a destitute, middle aged man living in a cheap, crumbling boarding house in Lisbon in 1989. Sickly and down on his luck, João consoles himself with Schubert's music and his love of cinema while enduring poverty and isolation. His eccentric obsessions - especially his awkward and disturbing infatuation with his landlady's young daughter - lead to his eviction. Cast out into the harsh city streets with no resources, he confronts increasing hardship and eventually ends up in a mental hospital, from which he tries to escape.
