Daniel Milton, who has disowned his only daughter for marrying against his will, is told by Ferris, his butler, that she is dead; Milton refuses to believe him, however, and when Ferris' daughter, Celia, a dancer, returns to the city, Ferris sends her to him, informing her that she is Milton's granddaughter. Ferris tries to burn letters proving the death of Milton's granddaughter, but Celia discovers the deception and resolves to return to the stage and break her engagement to Cary Grant. On the night of her premiere, Milton, Ferris, and Felice Huxley, Milton's ward, are in a box to greet her; Milton's former secretary, Dayne, jealous of Celia's inheritance rights, tries to shoot her; but Ferris protects her and is himself struck down. Before he dies, Ferris tells Milton the truth and is forgiven; Celia is reunited with Cary.
