The medieval castle of a self-righteous knight, surrounded by sycophantic subjects and mistresses, is visited by the wandering troubadour Engelbert with his lute. He boasts that he can recognize the girl he spent the night with last year on his visit by the smell of her hair. The test passes, the castle lord has his own wife "tested" and the troubadour recognizes her.
