Silica sand is used for fracking. Pure silica is scarce in the oil fields, but it's easy to find beneath the farms of Wisconsin. When the fracking craze started, corn fields turned into open pit mines. Then, when the price of oil dropped, those mines started to close. "Promise in the Sand" takes you to rural Wisconsin and Iowa, where the frack sand boom went bust.
