Gottfried Wäckerli (Schaggi Streuli) faithfully performs his duties as a cantonal police officer in the municipality of Allenwil. But one day, the dutiful law enforcement officer finds himself in serious conflict with his professional conscience and his feelings. Criminal offenses cast a shadow over his own family. Hans Bader (Joseph Scheidegger), an acquaintance of his daughter Marty (Eva Haefeli) and assistant to milkman Büttikofer (Johannes Steiner), is accused of stealing 50 francs from his employer. And Wäckerli's own son Ruedi (Peter Brogle), who is unhappy in his apprenticeship and has trouble managing money, is even suspected of stealing 10,000 francs from the municipal coffers. After a family dispute, Ruedi is fed up with his father's mistrust and leaves home - much to the horror of his mother (Margrit Rainer). He moves into Zurich's Niederdorf district, develops his talent as a decorator at the Chérie Bar, and is robbed by the shady Hoffmann (Ruedi Walter). Police officer Wäckerli struggles to shed light on the provincial affairs in which Allenwil's municipal treasurer Häberli (Emil Hegetschweiler) is also involved. But he succeeds, and he also manages, as a legal representative in the right place, to turn a blind eye, forgive the milkman Bader for his foolishness, and recognize the artistic abilities of his son Ruedi.
