Findus has a new mattress. Full of enthusiasm, he jumps around on it, preferably at the crack of dawn. The noise robs Pettersson of his sleep. Either his cat stops making noise immediately, or Findus' bed will be moved elsewhere. No sooner said than done - Findus takes his friend at his word and declares himself big and grown-up enough to move out of their shared bedroom and into the old outhouse. At first, Pettersson thinks it's a fun game and willingly helps renovate the wooden shed. But then he realizes that Findus is serious and has no intention of coming back, but is about to leave him alone forever. Pettersson is dismayed, and neither his kind neighbors nor a fishing trip can cheer him up. Fortunately, Findus soon realizes that his new independence also has its disadvantages. He is reasonably sure that he doesn't need any help to defend himself against the fox that is curiously prowling around the toilet house. And he can probably handle the tiny Mucklas who want to party in his new home on his own. But eating pancakes together and sleeping together in Pettersson's nice warm room are advantages he misses. Whether he is now a big cat or still a little kitten, Findus ultimately realizes that it is much nicer together than alone. So it's no wonder that the two friends are happily reunited in the end.
