Palermo oder Wolfsburg follows the journey of a young Sicilian man named Nicola, who leaves his impoverished home in southern Italy in search of a better life in West Germany. Hoping to support his family financially, he travels north and eventually finds work at the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg. Initially, Nicola settles in, makes friends with fellow Italian workers, and even falls in love with a German woman named Brigitte. However, his dreams of integration and belonging begin to unravel when Brigitte uses him to make her friends jealous and then leaves him. Devastated and driven by a traditional sense of honor, Nicola kills two of Brigitte's male acquaintances in a violent confrontation. His hopes for love and integration collapse after a humiliating romantic rejection, leading him to commit a violent crime. The film ends with his alienating trial, highlighting cultural dislocation, migrant labor, and the clash between Mediterranean traditions and German industrial society.
