In Paul Mazursky's semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story, young Larry Lapinsky leaves Brooklyn to seek out an acting career in Manhattan. From the clinging arms of a hysterical mother (Shelley Winters) he escapes to the bohemian, sexually liberated world of Greenwich Village in 1953.
