Six years before, Aleksander Larin, a well-known artist, left the Soviet Union for the USA. Today he is back to his country, which after the collapse of communism, has resumed the name of Russia. His first visit is for Masha, a beautiful young woman he knew as a child. At the time when Masha was a teenager Aleksander was to marry her mother, Anna, but fell in love with the daughter. Frightened of a situation he himself thought immoral, Aleksander ran away from the two women. Now Anna is married to a wealthy businessman and Masha is engaged. Aleksander soon finds his return to the "motherland" is pointless. The country has changed and dead love cannot be rekindled.
