After serving with Norwegian forces in Finland against the Soviets in 1940, Max Manus returns to Norway onto to it invaded and occupied by the Nazis. He organises a resistance movement but this is initially badly done, resulting in him having to flee to Britain. There, with training from the British, free Norwegians are trained and formed into formidable commando units with Max as one of their most capable and successful commanders.
