In regional Sicily, Jana tries to repair her sister's marriage to a ne'er-do-well by going to a sorceress who makes up a love potion that will bring about the couple's happiness. But, by a fatal misunderstanding, instead of her sister the spell works only on Jana herself and she is seized by an insane passion for her brother-in-law. Although they search in vain for a way to break the spell, they cannot withstand the force it wields. After a passionate conflict Jana takes steps to return to normal by asking the bishop to arrange a reconciliation between her and her own fiancé. They decide to speed up their own wedding and leave the region. But before they can depart Jana succumbs again to the spell and her brother-in-law. Her fiancé seeks revenge in the traditional Sicilian manner.
