Based on a Quechua legend, the film tells the story of a woman who lost her husband and son to a greedy landowner in Argentina's Santiago del Estero province. She vows never to remove her mourning veil until the landowner and his daughter are avenged. Nature seems to aid her, as drought strikes the land. Her second son, Malambo-a Quechua spiritual being (runa-uturungo) impervious to bullets-takes responsibility for the revenge. He leads the workers in revolt and defeats the landowner, but instead of killing the landowner's blind daughter, Urpila, he falls in love with her.
