Mahalia is a shy adolescent black girl. She can tell that she looks different than all the other girls around her, especially in ballet class, her lack of confidence which is not helped by two of her classmates, Abigail and Daisy, arguably unintentionally, highlighting their differences. The simple act of her mother, Anika, getting Mahalia's hair done for a ballet photo shoot has mixed results in terms of Mahalia's confidence or lack thereof.
