The Principality of St. Tulipe is in serious financial trouble. The ruler of the small state, Prince Gustavo VI (Adolfo Celi), travels to Rome with his family to negotiate a rescue loan. His ravishing daughter Cristina (Ornella Muti), however, is bored by the official appointments and stiff protocol. She would rather explore the big city and secretly slips away. On the way, she meets the smart bus driver Barnaba Cecchini (Adriano Celentano), who mistakes her for an ordinary tourist. For Barnaba, it is love at first sight. The witty heartthrob quickly decides that he will marry Cristina. The two spend a turbulent day together in the Eternal City. His confident advances amuse the princess. Nevertheless, she keeps the lovesick Roman waiting, knowing full well that her father would never approve of the relationship. When Cristina's noble origins finally come to light, Barnaba, unlike her, does not care about existing conventions. And so he brings the entire princely family's life into full swing with his refreshing manner. But after the bank refuses to grant a loan to the principality, Prince Gustavo sees only one way out: Cristina must marry a wealthy arms manufacturer. However, he has not reckoned with Barnaba's stoic perseverance, who still has a few tricks up his sleeve to win the heart and hand of his beloved.
