Mad Ship

During the Great Depression, the Sorenson family - father Tomas, mother Solveig, their adolescent son Petter and their infant daughter Liv - live on the Canadian prairies, specifically Manitoba, to where they emigrated from their Norwegian homeland. Solveig didn't really want to emigrate fearing never seeing her father again, but Tomas convinced her that there was arable land for the taking in America, on which they could carve out a better life than they had in Norway. But two years of drought during the crucial growing season while trying to farm in Manitoba have left them in a financial bind, with a large debt owing to the bank. One final natural disaster on top of the drought is enough for Tomas to concede that he must find work elsewhere. While Solveig wants them to go back to Norway, Tomas knows they don't have enough money for the passage. So Tomas leaves Solveig, Petter and Liv on the farm by themselves while he goes to look for work. The situation leaves Solveig to deal with Mr. Cameron, the bank representative, whose outward compassion for the Sorensons' plight masks other things on his mind. Meanwhile, Tomas is able to find some work, but the situation is less than perfect, especially as his employers, husband and wife Edmund and Adeline, are having their own problems, including their marriage being an inherently unhappy one. By the time Tomas goes back to the farm, he, out of the circumstance, changes his focus to granting Solveig's wish, however implausible it will be to achieve.

Amish Stud: The Eli Weaver Story

1 hr 25 mins
While he's out fishing with his Mennonite friend Jeremiah Peters on the morning of 2 June, Amish Eli Weaver receives a message via a call to Jeremiah's cell phone that Eli's wife, 29-year-old Barbara Weaver, has been found shot dead in their bed. While the Amish elders want to deal with the issue solely within their community, the Wayne County Sheriff's Department is forced to investigate in the murder having taken place in their jurisdiction, the two investigators being Detectives Bruce London and Mike Maxwell. What is subsequently shown is the current investigation interspersed with flashbacks of Eli and Barbara's life, which Eli admits to the investigators was not always perfect. Those flashbacks show that prior to their marriage, Barbara wanted to marry for romantic love, which is not the Amish way. Eli seemingly wanted the same; he was the black sheep of his family in not always adhering to Amish strictures. London and Maxwell have their theories of who the murderer is; they suspect Eli, who isn't reacting like a typical grieving husband and father, but they know they'll have problems finding evidence because the Amish Eli will have no digital footprint; and the community's sole telephone is a public one for emergencies, usable by anyone. They hope that the unofficial traditional Amish communication network, rampant gossip, will provide some clues. They find that some talk emerges in the form of a collection of women not in the community who were a part of Eli's secret life as the Amish Stud.
