Al Gorky is a womanizing, professional saxophonist who enjoys jobs playing at recording sessions, Broadway shows, weddings, museums and cruises. Calling himself a professional "New York Sideman". Buddy Chester is his long time best friend and trumpeteer who has been featured in jazz articles and has a musical discography. The two enjoy the spotlight and wild nights after they finish playing together in jazz clubs. When it is discovered that Buddy has constant migraine headaches caused by a brain tumor that will cause him to lose his sight and sound and no cure in sight, he enlists Al to throw him a big send off party featuring all of his friends and fellow musicians he has worked with making the rounds in New York City. A musical celebration featuring the best of everything. Buddy has other ideas as thoughts of suicide linger throughout as the party is taking shape towards a happy conclusion which includes the search of a trumpet owned by the great jazz musician Clifford Brown, which would make Buddy's goodbye party even more memorable.
