Widowed civil engineer Jack Evans has just moved with his ten year old daughter Sophie from Chicago to the west coast city of Ocean Hill partly to escape the grief of their collective loss. Rather than be able to spend time with Sophie, Jack learns he has what looks to be an unreasonable work deadline. As such, he ends up touching base with Sophie's teacher, Miss Taylor, Lucy, to ensure that Sophie has as smooth a transition into school as possible. Sophie's arrival at school coincides with the students starting their respective science fair projects. Sophie's approved project on the magic of rainbows, which have a propensity to occur in Ocean Hill, concerns Jack, he not articulating that concern or the reason behind it. But as Sophie works on the project, she and Jack may have to discuss those reasons, which are related to her mother, as another work issue arises which may truncate their lives in Ocean Hill and as there seems to be burgeoning feelings between Jack and Lucy.
