Philippe and Rosa have decided to get a divorce. By mutual agreement, they want the separation to go smoothly so as not to hurt their four children - two teenage boys and two young girls. Each has already found emotional comfort elsewhere; Philippe, in particular, is having an affair with a young Swedish woman who, however, struggles to accept his attachment to his family. After finding an apartment in the city and taking care of the legal procedures, Philippe leaves the house, which Rosa will continue to live in with the children.
