In medieval France, Violaine is the elder daughter of a wealthy farmer, Anne Vercors. Violaine is engaged to Jacques Hury, but her life changes when she compassionately kisses a leper, Pierre de Craon, out of Christian charity. She contracts leprosy and accepts her suffering as a spiritual trial. Believing herself unworthy of marriage, she withdraws from the world and renounces her engagement. Her sister Mara, driven by jealousy and ambition, marries Jacques instead. Years later, when Mara's child is born dead, she seeks out Violaine-now living in isolation-and begs her to intervene. Through a miracle attributed to Violaine's faith and purity, the child is restored to life.
