Lafayette Reviews

This costume drama, set at the time of the American Revolution, follows the 20-year-old Lafayette (Le Royer) as he travels from his native France to America. He aids in the colonial cause and eventually is hired by George Washington (St. John) to bring about the downfall of General Cornwallis (Hawkins). The picture is weighed down by its need for spectacle, and displays little grace in its presentation. It boasts two of cinema's greatest directors as part of the cast--Welles, doing his best as Ben Franklin, and De Sica. (In French; English subtitles.)
