William, a rebellious young outsider, survives on odd jobs and petty theft, rejecting materialist values. He enters a strained relationship with Noëlle, a woman from a wealthier background, while Vogel, a trainee police officer, keeps an eye on William and unsuccessfully tries to seduce Noëlle. Unable to reconcile their desires and social positions, the three characters eventually part ways, each left unfulfilled.
