An E-Kaw tribal village near the Burmese border. Villager Ar Yo marries his childhood sweetheart Ar Mee Yo, who bears him twins. This is regarded as an evil omen; the infants are killed, and Ar Yo and his wife are expelled from the village. Ar Mee Yo drowns during this ordeal, and Ar Yo is later attacked and left for dead by Chinese Haw opium traders, who take him for a police informant. He is nursed back to health by Yao tribesmen, and falls in love with Mei Fin, daughter of the village chief. This turn thwarts her intended engagement to Tuan Ho, and leads to another expulsion. Ar Yo and Mei Fin start a new life growing opium in a Musor village. One day, three strangers appear and attack them.
