In contemporary Geneva, the ordinary lives of eight characters intertwine. Max, a former activist turned proofreader, and Madeleine, a secretary devoted to tantrism, join forces to derail a real-estate project that would dispossess Marguerite, an eco-conscious market gardener, and her husband Marcel, a zoologist who sees animal life as a source of wisdom. Their actions affect Mathieu, an unemployed man forced back into alienating work to support his family. Elsewhere, Mario, a radical history teacher, ends up working in a retirement home after his love for Marie, an unconventional supermarket cashier. Marie, scarred by imprisonment, reunites with him and with Charles, an elderly former railway worker. These crossed destinies blend daily life with memory, fantasy, and faint glimpses of the future, carried by Jonas.
