Jake is a writer in a troubled marriage to Maggie. He cannot stop thinking about other women in his life, characters he constantly invents conversations with: his deceased wife Julie, his daughter Molly, his sister Karen, and his psychiatrist Edith. All he does is have imaginary conversations with real people who are out of his life at the moment. Maggie cannot stand how his mind wanders off all the time. She decides that they should separate for six months, then decide whether to reunite or divorce. Jake has a few girlfriends, but spends the six months of separation only having these imaginary conversations except for a few interactions with real people.
