Having just graduated from law school, Monty Milde takes the train for the city and meets the daughter of William Baker. They are mistaken for a newly-married couple, and the fact that Monty has the berth above the girl's makes their position all the more embarrassing. It develops that Monty has been hired as lawyer for the girl's father, who wants to prove that his brother has forged a will, depriving him and his daughter of their rightful fortune. A crucial letter is destroyed by his opponents when he is doublecrossed by a witness; however, Monty discovers that the watermark, a horseshoe, on the will is dated after the date appearing on the document. After much difficulty, he wins the case and actually marries the girl.
