With Holland being a coastal country and with one-sixth of its land mass covered by water, the Dutch are adept at moving via the water. Although many of the conveyances are for work purposes, there are just as many which are used more for recreational pursuits. In combination with sufficient winds due to the flat land, competitive and pleasure sailing are major activities, especially on summer weekends, with the English word yacht derived from the Dutch language. Activities during a week of a race near Leiden and another race for larger sailboats off the coast of Northern Holland are shown, with Dutch of all ages participating in the fun in one form or another.
