In 1933, a nightclub singer, Georgia King (Janis Paige), has been seeing Steve Maddux (Zachary Scott), a gambler. After another gambler, Felix Bender (Sheldon Leonard), shows up in Joe's office with a gun trying to rob them, Felix ends up dead. Steve goes to Miami, where, his brother-in-law and club owner Joe Marino (George Tobias) and wife Ruby (Faye Emerson) welcome him. Steve agrees to work for Joe after Joe sets him up to lose $50,000 in a crooked card game. Newspaper columnist Don Corwin (Dane Clark) and a cop, Bill Fellows (Howard Smith), begin looking into Bender's death, assuming incorrectly murder. Don falls for Georgia, even though Fellows warns him that she's been keeping company with a criminal. After an sparring match between Don and Steve, a thug named Candy (Harry Lewis) takes it upon himself to beat up Don, putting him in the hospital. Don and Georgia argue causing her to leave Saratoga for New York City. When Steve sees her in a newspaper photo dating Don, he goes to get her back by marrying her. Don gets cold feet when he realizes the police are planning a raid on Steve's club's opening night but his warning comes a little late. Standing in his office overlooking the floor behind bulletproof glass, Steve holds a machine gun on the crowd. But he accidentally shoots and kills Ruby. After causing Ruby, Steve's sister, to be killed by mistake, Steve makes an enemy of Joe. Candy drives a getaway car with Steve. A manhunt ensues. Georgia visits him in his wharf warehouse hideout. He tries to break it off, realizing she's better off without him, but she won't allow that. Candy then betrays him to Joe who goes to get revenge for his wife's death. Joe ends up shooting Steve who returns fire. Meanwhile, Candy tips the police also and Georgia arrives in time to find him lying shot. Steve then dies in Georgia's arms.
