When impoverished composer Eric Temple goes with his sister Alice to visit her fiancé's aunt in Ireland, he falls in love with Margaret Neville, who lives on an adjoining estate with her father and young stepmother. Lord Neville wants Margaret to marry Sir Geoffrey Pomfret, a wealthy amateur musician, but she prefers Eric, who has dedicated the song "Heartsease" from his new opera to her. After Lady Neville, who likes Eric, secretly pays some debts incurred by his deceased father and promises to submit his score to a producer, Pomfret obtains the score and tells Lord Neville about his wife's payments. Calling Eric an adventurer, Lord Neville orders him out. Margaret, believing that Eric desires Lady Neville, refuses to see him. After Eric is beaten by Pomfret's cohorts, his memory becomes foggy until, at the opening of Pomfret's opera, he and Margaret hear "Heartsease" and realize that the opera is Eric's. Pomfret is reduced to a social outcast, while Eric and Margaret marry.
