In the late 1970s Hanne Strong began to gift land to various religious and spiritual traditions in the tiny town of Crestone, Colorado, where there are now over 24 spiritual communities. The Flame refers to each spiritual or religious group keeping the flame of their tradition or lineage alive. Crestone is unusual in that there are so many different groups in proximity to each other that all get along well. The film is concerned with the differences that set apart the various spiritual groups, as well as the similarities that are universal truths throughout all religions. Interwoven with the exploration of the nine spiritual groups represented in the film is the history of Crestone as it is told by ranchers, storekeepers and local homesteader families.
