Heart Beats tells the story of Josiah Samuels, handsome and scholarly, who secretly admires Tobias Kingsley. Josiah, a member of the Light Group, and Tobias, a member of the Dark Group, are separated based on skin tone and social class. When Tobias notices Josiah's affection, the two quickly fall in love. They hide their romance from their respective groups because of disapproval of them being together. In the end, they must find the courage to stand up for their love or face hiding in the shadows. In the end, they must overcome the obstacles surrounding them or silently live a lie.
