17-year-old Hala is an immigrant who, in front of her parents, carefully observes the traditions of her religion and ethnicity. Alone, however, she doesn't necessarily feel tied to those things — she rides a skateboard to school, reads Anne Carson's works, explores her sexuality freely, and falls in love with a blonde classmate named Jesse. When one day her father discovers that she is not as pristine as he thinks she is, she finds her life, both at home and out of it, unraveling.
