Henry's friend Leo owns and runs the hottest Italian restaurant in San Francisco, but it is evident he doesn't get along with his star head chef Matteo, who wants to modernize, like Villa Al Fresco where he worked before, while Leo sticks to his founding grandmother Carmella, after whom it was named. Leo suspects his wife Claudia of having an affair. Leo also employs Claudia's nephew, his apprentice Dom, who is the son of Leo's brother-in-law, ex-con Frank. A break-in occurs at the restaurant, and Leo is shot. All Leo saw was that the shooter wore red sneakers, and nothing was taken. Leo ends up being killed in the hospital, with Henry and Maggie working the case, despite rising tensions between them as their exes reappear. Henry works out the robbery occurred shortly after a family visit in Sicily to the dying founder, whose sister Doris lives in Frisco. Co-owner Sara never canceled the fat insurance on the former chef, but clues in a letter and a painting lead them to Leo's family treasure in diamonds.
