Eoj, a sentient purple broccoli, wins a grand prize from a game show on his home planet of Crowak. The prize is a two-week trip to Earth where, with his shape-shifting abilities, he takes on the appearance of a "lovable sleazoid". As a vegetable, Eoj is intrigued by animal sexual behavior, so he wants to meet as many women as he can. He is set down in the woods near Prospect, CT, a location described as being full of willing women. Hildy, a reporter, sees him at his initial press conference and decides she wants to chronicle Eoj's adventures while on Earth. One skeptical female reporter asks he why he thinks Earthwomen would be interested in his approach. With a few gestures, he has her like putty in his hands. Hildy goes everywhere with him and becomes embroiled in the same awkward situations as he does. Getting in the way of Eoj's primary pursuits are a quartet of Jewish hillbillies (the Goldbergs) who think he is a communist and a gang of bank robbers who want to exploit his shape shifting abilities.
