French Postcards Reviews

Very modest, but surprisingly sweet. The naive escapades of a group of American students studying in France for a year is given a charming, somewhat corny treatment by the authors of AMERICAN GRAFFITI--Huyck (who also directed) and Katz. Pisier plays a teacher who offers her culture to the students while at the same time expressing an interest in the US. She has an affair with one of her pupils (Chapin), though it soon ends when he leaves for Spain. In the meantime, though, the students visit famous sights (as many of the Michelin Guide's 212 major sights as they can) and destroy the language in their attempts to sound Parisian. The interplay between French and American cultures makes for interesting subject matter; one only wishes it could have been fleshed out rather more. Imagine a weakly directed version of AMERICAN GRAFFITI set in France. Future star Debra Winger appears in an early role.
