Granger murders his wife in turn-of-the-century London. He is discovered by maid Simmons, who has always secretly loved him. She blackmails her way into the housekeeper position, and Granger decides he has to kill her too. Pursuing her in the fog, he mistakes someone else for her and kills a stranger.
