Pavia, end of the 1970s: Nino Monti, a well-known tax consultant, pays for the bus ticket of a miserable-looking, sick woman who has no change. That very evening, she wants to give him back the 100 lire and introduces herself: Anna Brigatti, his great childhood sweetheart. To his wife's horror, he becomes obsessed with Anna, sees pictures of her when she was young and beautiful and tries to see her again. He is all the more shocked when a doctor friend who knew Anna tells him that she died three years ago. Nino won't let go and wants to see Anna again. She calls him to tell him that he can visit her in a manor house in the country. There she welcomes him, young and good-looking as in the old days, but she is now married to the owner of the house, Count Zighi. In order to make love again as they used to, they meet on a boat on the river - but Anna suddenly disappears under the water. Nino calls the police, who search for Anna - without success. Nino, who has now been abandoned by his wife, starts to investigate Anna and has to admit to himself that his supposed certainties do not stand up to reality.
